Topic: Scientific and technological advances have changed our lives. But some scientists in some fields say that scientists are not able to find solutions to the problems they have created. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

We sure live differently from our parents did decades ago. The changes are wide and profound. At the same time, we are facing challenges and problems unknown in the past. Could we find solutions to problems created by scientific development? The answer seems to be no.

Some of the most obvious problems caused by technological advances lie in the IT industry. At a time when we did not have computers and electronic bank services, people took money with them and paid by cash. If they were stolen, only the amount they had with them was lost. But now credit cards are more commonly used in shopping malls and other places, crimes again us have become more serious and caused greater losses to people. A thief may tape the code of your credit card and make a copy of it. Then he could safely withdraw all your money from an ATM machine. Crimes such as this are very sticky to solve because there is no witness and the surveillance cameras give little help to the police.

Another example is the issue of information control with the media industry including TV networks and Internet that give easy access to information without discrimination to people’s age. This has created a huge problem for parents and schools because teenage people are particularly vulnerable to adult materials and information violent in nature. In the past, when most information came in the form of print, it was relatively easy to control what children read. When a parent put away a book unsuitable for children, they were cut off from the source of information. With computer parents could use software to filter bad web sites but could not prevent new ones from appearing every day.

People are working very hard to solve such problems that come along with advances in science and technology, but the efforts are not sufficient and not very successful. Even with the little progress we have achieved, we find ourselves defeated by new problems with greater complexity and in wider scope.

In conclusion, developments in many fields of our life have brought us both benefits and problems. Developments in the banking industry give us greater convenience but making us targets of computer-based theft. Changes in media industry expose young people to inappropriate information difficult for parent’s control. However up until now, we have not successfully found permanent solutions yet.

Topic:Some famous universities lower their academic requirements to enroll students who have outstanding athletic talents. To what extent do you agree with this practice? Give reasons based on your experience.
It seems a fashion that many universities would like to lower their academic standards to enrol students who have special athletic talents. Universities do so because they want to strengthen their competitive ability in nearly all kinds of sports games. However, there will be some disadvantage if universities lose control on themselves.
I think that it is a good thing for both the university and the students with special athletic talents when the university just lowers academic standards slightly. The university can improve its ability in sports competition, and the special students can catch up with academic study. They may also play an important role in stimulating other students’ interest in sports.
But it will be harmful to other students and the special students if universities only care about their sports power and enrol those students with athletic talents who have a big academic gap. Accompanied by those outstanding sportsmen, other students will feel unfair. In addition, it will be very difficult for those special students to keep their normal study. One of my classmates, a female special student, quit from our university after having failed almost all subjects in the first school year. She went back to her hometown without saying good-bye to us. Such cases are very common in universities. Those students with special athletic talents are like machines to universities, and not many people really care what they think about. Many of them have to quit, which I believe will bring a long-term, negative impact on their future.
It’s not bad for universities to enrol some students who have special athletic telnets, but at the same time, universities should treat these special students as normal students: care for their athletic talents, and care for their academic performance.

風大浪大,怕怕.......不過幾過癮!

the definition of HAPPY

Who can tell me the exact definition of "HAPPY"?
Nobody but yourself!
Exactly i do agree with that.
For someone , happy could be a smile disappeared in the twinkling of an eye.
For someone , happy could be a sincere thanks gaining from others.
.......
For me , happy is such a simple issue.
When i am talking with someone (actually a girl/a best friend/......), even if we are on the phone, i feel happy .
When i am looking at her cute and "circinal" face , even though i have seen her for once only, i also feel happy . XP
......
That 's the real sighificance of happy for ME.
So that 's it. *HAPPY*

YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL----- JAMES BLUNT

My life is brilliant.
My life is brilliant.
My love is pure.
I saw an angel. Of that I'm sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
She was with another man.
But I won't lose no sleep on that, 'Cause I've got a plan.
You're beautiful. You're beautiful. You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw you face in a crowded place
And I don't know what to do
'Cause I'll never be with you.
Yes, she caught my eye, As we walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was, Fucking high
And I don't think that I'll see her again
But we shared a moment that will last till the end.
You're beautiful. You're beautiful. You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw you face in a crowded place
And I don't know what to do
'Cause I'll never be with you.
(La-la-la-la, La-la-la-la, La-la-la-la, Laaah)
You're beautiful. You're beautiful. You're beautiful, it's true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But it's time to face the truth
I will never be with you.......

Topic:Some people think that the government should provide assistance to all kinds of artists includes painters, musicians, poets, however, other people think that is a waste of money for providing this assistance. State your opinion.

To be of assistance or not, it indeed is debatable if artists deserve and require funding by the government. Firstly, I acknowledge that the benefits from artists and poets can enrich our everyday lives in so many different ways; otherwise our life would have been a lot drabber without them.
Any genuine artist most certainly deserves some form of aid and there can not be any doubt about that, however, whether they require government assistance is another issue altogether. Contrary to popular belief it seems to be that not all artists and literary personalities are wealthy, and most renowned personalities are deservedly rich and famous.
While the other large group of artists is neither rich nor famous, they do continue to produce the art works as for the passion and often the passion is what drives them. It would be ridiculous to think that any kind of financial incentives could power their creativity. However, not many of them are able to take up their passion on a full time basis because they cannot afford to. It is import to note that most creative artists are made, and were not born so. It is the vagaries of life & struggles that they have to face which fuels their creativity, in the process they need to mature into renowned to be an artist or a writer. When they do and when their work is recognized, there will not be any dearth of money or fame.
In my opinion, it would be criminal to take away this very drive and shun their creativity. Having said that, I do believe that they need to have some kind of incentives, it can be in the way of appreciation and opportunity to present their talent to the rest of the world. This could be done in various ways, for instance, giving tax incentives to amateur artists and writers or financial rebates in government owned auditoriums to stage their presentations.
In talking about artists in Australia, which has a concrete social security system in place to take care of all kinds of basic needs, any kind of added financial incentives are not only an added burden on the taxpayer. It would be an issue to find out worthy beneficiaries and there will be enough crooks who will misuse any well intended government assistance schemes. Every human being craves for recognition and money happens to be one of the means towards this end, however, as I mentioned in the beginning it is more important to acknowledge their work than provide financial assistance.
On the other hand, as a Chinese, my perception of the government’s assistance is more questionable. Firstly, we need to give artists a definition and how do you classify a person who is an artist. In essence, calligraphy, poetry, music and art they all can be extended to a person who writes well, paints well in his/her Blog. To extend this artist sense further, can we say a singer is an artist? Well, there are many pop song and folk music singers in China. In the same way, a dancer, a talk show’s talent, a movie star, the director, the photographer they can all be artists. And this number of artists would add up to whole population of Australia. How could the Chinese government provide any assistance without any discrimination to those artists in every classification? I personally do not believe our government has enough financial ability to accommodate this wide ganging number of artists.
As a Chinese I can see that in my country, there is still a big gap between the poor and the rich, I would rather government’s financial assistance be directed toward the poor, this does not mean that I would think to provide assistance to artists is a waste of money. My point is that while we can give a true definition of artists, government should use our taxes in a way to be more accountable for.
